DeFever 45 Yacht Gets a Complete Marine Electrical & Power Management Upgrade
When the owner of this 2009 DeFever 45 came to Upgrade Marine, the goal was more than simply adding battery capacity or solar panels. The boat was being prepared for long-term cruising, with an emphasis on becoming as energy independent as possible while spending extended periods at anchor or on a mooring.
To accomplish that, we designed and installed a complete marine electrical and power management system centered around Victron Energy equipment, 900 amp hours of LiFePO₄ battery storage and 1,840 watts of solar.
The result is a significantly more capable electrical system designed to provide the power the boat needs while reducing reliance on a traditional generator.
1,840 Watts of Marine Solar
A major part of the upgrade is the addition of 1,840 watts of solar power.
For a cruising boat, solar can dramatically change the way onboard electrical power is managed. Instead of relying on a generator to replace energy consumed during normal use, the solar array can continuously replenish the battery bank whenever sufficient sunlight is available.
The goal isn't simply to install as many panels as possible. Solar production needs to be integrated with the boat's battery capacity, charging equipment, and overall electrical consumption. In this system, the solar array works together with the Victron power management equipment to make better use of the energy being produced throughout the day.
900Ah of Victron LiFePO₄ Battery Storage
To store the energy produced by the solar array, we installed 900 amp hours of Victron Next Generation LiFePO₄ battery capacity.
The larger battery bank gives the boat substantially more usable stored energy and allows solar production during the day to be carried into periods when the boat is consuming power but solar production is limited.
For a cruising boat, that stored energy is particularly valuable overnight and during periods of low solar production. It also gives the owner the ability to operate more of the boat's electrical equipment without immediately needing to start a generator or engine for charging.
Less Generator Runtime. More Time at Anchor.
The ultimate objective of this project wasn't simply to build a larger electrical system. It was to make the boat more enjoyable to use.
By combining substantial solar production, 900Ah of lithium battery storage, engine-based charging, and integrated power management, this DeFever 45 is better equipped for extended time away from the dock.
Reducing generator runtime means less fuel consumption, less noise, and less disruption while enjoying time onboard. It also means less generator noise for neighboring boats.
For the owner, the result is a boat with significantly greater electrical independence and a power system designed around the way they actually want to cruise.
