Beneteau Oceanis 51.1 LiFePO4 Conversion: Upgrading a Cruising Sailboat’s Electrical System

Victron LiFePO4 battery system installed on a Beneteau Oceanis 51.1

This Beneteau Oceanis 51.1 received a complete house battery upgrade designed to provide more usable power and greater energy independence while cruising. Upgrade Marine replaced the existing AGM battery bank with a Victron next-generation LiFePO4 system and integrated it with a high-output alternator and the boat’s existing solar array.

For cruising sailboats, upgrading from traditional lead-acid or AGM batteries to lithium can significantly increase usable battery capacity while reducing weight and improving charging efficiency. This project was designed around exactly that goal: giving the owners more usable energy without having to rely as heavily on their engine or generator.

Upgrading the Oceanis 51.1 Battery Bank to LiFePO4

The original system used five AGM house batteries. While AGM batteries are a proven technology for marine applications, only a portion of their rated capacity is available for regular use.

For this Oceanis 51.1, we replaced the five AGM batteries with three Victron next-generation LiFePO4 batteries. The new battery bank provides more than 200 additional amp hours of usable capacity while also reducing the overall weight of the battery bank.

For a cruising sailboat with significant electrical demands, that additional usable capacity can make a substantial difference in how long the boat can operate between charging cycles without sacrificing the creature comforts.

Recharging With A Solar System

This Oceanis 51.1 was already equiped with a bimini solar array, so the new electrical system was designed to work with the existing solar charging capability.

Combining solar charging with the new LiFePO4 battery bank and high-output alternator gives the boat multiple sources of energy throughout a cruising day.

Under sail or at anchor, the solar array can continue replenishing the batteries without running an engine or generator. While motor cruising, the alternator provides another high-output charging source. The result is a more flexible energy system.

More Usable Power With Less Reliance on the Generator

With the upgraded battery capacity, solar charging, and high-output alternator working together, this Oceanis 51.1 now has significantly more usable energy available for cruising.

That can mean more time running navigation equipment, refrigeration, communication systems, lighting, and other onboard loads while spending less time running fuel-burning engines or generators.

For owners planning extended cruising, these improvements can make the boat's electrical system much more capable and convenient to live with.

While this project was completed on a Beneteau Oceanis 51.1, the same approach can be applied to many Beneteau sailboats and other cruising yachts. We recently completed a similar lithium and solar upgrade on a Beneteau Antares 9, combining lithium batteries, solar charging, and a Victron electrical system
