Sailboat Solar Installation in San Diego: 300W Bimini Solar and Starlink Mini Upgrade

Reliable power and internet connectivity are becoming essential for modern boat owners. Whether you're cruising the California coast, spending weekends at anchor, or working remotely from your sailboat, a properly designed solar and communications system can dramatically improve life onboard.

Recently, the team here at Upgrade Marine completed a custom solar and Starlink Mini installation on a 31-foot sailboat in San Diego. The goal was simple: maximize energy production and provide reliable internet connectivity while maintaining the clean appearance and functionality of the vessel.

The Challenge: Limited Space on a Small Sailboat

Unlike larger yachts that can accommodate solar arches or extensive hardtop installations, smaller sailboats often have limited space available for solar panels and communication equipment.

Our client wanted to:

  • Maximize solar charging capacity

  • Add reliable internet connectivity with Starlink Mini

  • Avoid bulky mounting structures

  • Maintain a clean, low-profile appearance

  • Integrate all equipment into the vessel's existing DC electrical system

Finding space for both a large solar panel and Starlink Mini required careful planning and custom fabrication.

Custom Bimini-Mounted Solar Installation

To maximize available space, we designed and installed a custom mounting system that utilizes the vessel's bimini structure.

The result was a clean installation capable of supporting a 300-watt solar panel while preserving cockpit usability and maintaining an attractive appearance.

This location offered several advantages:

  • Excellent exposure to sunlight

  • Minimal shading throughout the day

  • Efficient use of otherwise unused space

  • No need for a stern arch or additional structure

  • Improved onboard energy production for extended cruising

For many sailboats, a custom bimini-mounted solar solution provides one of the best balances between performance, aesthetics, and cost.

Victron SmartSolar MPPT Charge Controller

To maximize solar harvesting, the system was paired with a Victron SmartSolar MPPT charge controller.

Benefits include:

  • Higher charging efficiency

  • Bluetooth monitoring through the VictronConnect app

  • Industry-leading reliability for marine applications

  • Improved performance in changing weather conditions

  • Better battery charging performance

Victron Energy products continue to be among our preferred solutions for marine solar installations because of their reliability, monitoring capabilities, and proven performance in harsh marine environments.

Custom Starlink Mini Installation

The owner also wanted reliable internet connectivity while cruising and at anchor.

To accomplish this, we fabricated and installed a custom carbon fiber mounting solution for the Starlink Mini.

The mounting location was selected to provide an unobstructed view of the sky while maintaining a clean appearance and minimizing interference with vessel operations.

The compact size of the Starlink Mini makes it an excellent option for sailboats where mounting space is limited.

Why We Powered Starlink Mini with 24V DC

One of the most overlooked aspects of a Starlink Mini installation is power system design.

Many installations simply power Starlink through an inverter, converting battery power from DC to AC before powering the Starlink power supply. While functional, this introduces unnecessary conversion losses and increases overall power consumption.

For this project, we integrated the Starlink Mini directly into the vessel's DC electrical system.

Using a Victron DC-DC converter, we stepped the vessel's 12V battery system up to 24V DC, which provides optimal operating voltage for the Starlink Mini.

This approach offers several advantages:

  • Improved power efficiency

  • Reduced inverter runtime

  • Lower overall energy consumption

  • Cleaner installation

  • Greater system reliability

For boats relying on solar power and battery storage, every amp-hour matters. Designing systems to operate directly from DC power can significantly improve overall energy efficiency.

The Finished System

The completed installation provides the owner with:

  • 300W of solar charging capacity

  • Victron SmartSolar MPPT charging

  • Starlink Mini high-speed internet connectivity

  • Direct DC-powered operation

  • Custom carbon fiber mounting solution

  • Clean, low-profile installation

  • Improved onboard energy independence

Most importantly, the vessel gained substantial solar charging capability and reliable internet access without sacrificing appearance or requiring large structural modifications.
